Sushil Kumar Claims Bronze Medal in 66KG Wrestling: Beijing Olympics
Beijing :20-Aug-2008, Sushil Kumar (25), Delhi , won Bronze medal in 66Kg Wrestling in the Olympics saga this afternoon.
Kumar took three periods to beat Leonid Spiridonov of Kazakhstan 2-1, 0-1 and 1-0.
Spiridonov finished fourth in the 66kg weight class in Athens, while Kumar took 14th place.
With this medal, India stands at 46th position with a gold and a bronze medal.
Kumar defeated Leonid Speiridonov of Kazakhstan to grab the bronze. This is the second medal for India at the Beijing Olympics after shooter Abhinav Bindra claimed the first ever individual Olympic gold in the 10 m Air Rifle event.
This was the second medal for India in wrestling since K D Jhadav’s bronze medal at the 1952 Helsinki Olympic Games.
The wrestler had lost to Andriy Stadnik from Ukraine in the first round of the 66kg freestyle wrestling event, leaving his medal hopes hinging on the repechage. Kumar defeated American Doug Schwab in the first repechage round and Belarusian Albert Batyrov in the second repechage round. Kumar beat Spiridonov 3:1, with scores of 2-1, 0-1, 2-0 in the three rounds.
Spiridonov had finished fourth in the 63kg weight class at the 2004 Athens Olympic Games, while Kumar had taken the 14th place
